25 Questions Tag!

25 Questions Tag
Thank you for tagging me ‘Bini Blogs Beauty’

1. Do you have any pets?
I have one cockatiel named Charlie 500. We did have a dog, a Lhasa Apso X named Angel but we had to part with her after some near misses with our youngest son. Unfortunately her arthritis was making her very stroppy and she became snappy whenever our son got too close. We still cry about it now.

2. Name 3 things that are physically close to you.
My office chair – I should be working right now!
A handful of tissues – I’m recovering from a nasty cold
A lukewarm latte from the café next door

3. What's the weather like right now?
Gorgeous, sunny and prediction of 29 degrees

4. Do you drive? If so have you crashed?
I drive a tank, so I’m not sure whether I have crashed. Was that a speed bump or a Suzuki Swift?

5. What time did you wake up this morning?
My alarm went off at 6.10am, and I snoozed it twice. I dragged myself up at 06.28am

6. When was the last time you showered?
This morning! And I brushed my teeth too!

7. What was the last movie you saw?
Salaam Namaste. I love a hindi movie from time to time. This one was shot in Melbourne, Australia back in 2005 and has some particularly terrible acting in it. Tania Zaetta even makes an appearance. Very modern themes for a Bollywood movie.

8. What does your last text message say?
The last text I received was from my 14 year old No.1 son and it says “At school luv u very much have a great day”. Isn’t he a sweetheart?

9. What's your ringtone?
Bongo drums – very annoying for my colleagues, especially when I forget to put my phone on silent and go off to a long meeting!

10. Have you ever been to a different country?
Hawaii, England, France, Amsterdam, India.

11. Do you like sushi?
I don’t mind those rolls, but I only like the one with prawn and avocado, or crispy chicken. I’m not sure that that counts as sushi!

12. Where do you buy your groceries?
I’m a Coles girl. Nice wide aisles. Limited range. Flybuys.

13. Have you ever taken medication to help you fall asleep faster?
I have Stilnox at home but I have never taken it. I heard some horror stories about people doing crazy things on it so I chickened out. Since I bought a super dooper deluxe bed – my insomnia has just about fixed itself!

14. How many siblings do you have?
One – my brother is 15 months older than me.

15. Do you have a desktop computer or a laptop?
I have both but the desktop is really just gathering dust and housing the router for the Wi-Fi. I’m warming up to the idea of an iPad too.

16. How old will you be turning on your next birthday?
A year older than my last birthday! Yikes.

17. Do you wear contacts or glasses?
I have glasses but don’t need to wear them very often. Only when I am very tired.

18. Do you colour your hair?
Yes. I need to wash those greys right outta my hair! I have an old lady housewife stripe of grey coming at a very fast pace.

19. Tell me something you are planning to do today?
I was planning to start tidying the house for my son’s 2nd birthday party on Saturday. Not feeling the motivation just yet.

20. When was the last time you cried?
A few weeks ago when my husband was being a cave man. Ug Ug.

21. What is your perfect pizza topping?
Americana – meat, onion, cheese or Aussie – meat, egg, cheese. I’m afraid I cannot indulge in these foods any more.

22. Which do you prefer-hamburgers or cheeseburgers?
I love a hamburger – minus the bun, beetroot, onion. Darn it – just serve me up a slice of tasteless dead cow.

23. Have you ever had an all-nighter?
Absolutely – all kinds too!

24. What is your eye colour?
Once upon a time my eyes were blue. Now they are a greenish yellow tinge. Perhaps I need to detox?

25. Can you taste the difference between Pepsi and Coke?
Yup. I am not a cola connoisseur but I can tell the difference. Although for cleaning toilets and unclogging drains both products work equally well.

IMATS Sydney 2010

Here are two pictures from IMATS Sydney 2010. I attended on the first day, Saturday 18th September. There were quite a few stallholders selling their wares, some guest speakers showing their skills and some student make up artists trying to win some prizes in a competition. One of my favourite sections was a museum of familiar looking items. I took photos of my two favourites.

Australians will recognise this lovable 'Beaver' from the advertising campaign for 'U by Kotex' sanitary protection. The campaign centres around looking after your 'beaver'. A snippet from their website states 'At U by Kotex®, we think it’s high time we all stopped being so damn shy about our vaginas. You don’t need to do a Paris or Britney, but being able to talk about it without going red is a good start. After all, we’ve all got one. In fact, we’ve only got one, so make sure you take good care of it with U by Kotex®, where you can find information about having a healthy vagina, puberty, menstruation and femcare products.' I did feel compelled to give this beaver a pat, but thought better of it!

The second photo is an robotic mans arm that recently featured in an Australian beer advertisement. I have tried to Google the beer company name, but I can't find it. As I am not a beer drinker, the beer ads do not tend to resonate with me. Anyway, the general gist of it is this bloke is at the pub and is having his arm lovingly stroked by his girlfriend while she in engaged in boring conversation with her friends. He detaches himself from his arm and goes and joins his mates at the pub, and his girlfriend is none the wiser, still stroking the robotic arm.

Contour colours

Here is a photo of the contour colours I use most often - depending on my mood!

The square blush on the left is Illamasqua Powder Blush in Rumour.
The round blush on the right is MAC Blush in Strada.

The depth of the colours are very similar, however the Strada has more of a blue or cooler undertone, where the Rumour is more neutral.  There may be a tiny bit more light on the MAC blush, as it appears slightly lighter in the picture than in person.

This MAC blush is my very first MAC purchase, and really should be thrown away due to it's very old age - but I just can't part with it!  I have heard people say that Strada has been discontinued, but others have said it is now available only in PRO stores.  You'll have to check out your local MAC hidey-hole to see whether you can find it.

CHANEL foundation - Colour variations

Check out the difference between the ranges.  Both the Pro Lumiere and the Vitalumiere shown here are in the lightest colour 10.

Keep this in mind when you are buying your cosmetics online.

Apologies for missing these out of the video - this is what happens when you rush!

Review - Mascara's from Cover Girl and Mirenesse

I don’t recommend spending big dollars on mascara if you can get away with a less expensive brand. Mascara should be replaced every 3 months although I sometimes stretch mine a few more months. Once it starts to dry or becomes difficult to apply neatly, pitch it! Getting an eye infection or a stye is not worth the few dollars you are saving. NEVER add water or thinners to your mascara and certainly never share with you sisters or friends.

Cover Girl – VolumeExact Mascara

Love it! This mascara works wonders on my sensitive eyes. I don’t bother buying the waterproof version as the regular type works a treat. I was given this mascara in a gift pack, and would never have bought it to try assuming that the cheaper cosmetic brands are irritating. Boy was I wrong! I am frequently complimented on my eyes and/or lashes when I wear this. This mascara is volumising not lengthening, so it does not contain fibres.

My tip to applying this mascara is to carefully sweep once or twice in a downward motion on the TOP SIDE of your lashes – being very careful not to poke your eyelid and muck up your carefully applied eye shadow! Then apply as you usually would, wiggling upward from the undersides of your lashes.

You will need to remove this mascara with a makeup remover, although most of it will be taken off with a foaming face cleanser or make up remover wipe.

Product size: 7.2 ml
AUD Price: $15.95 ($2.22 per ml)
Find it: In Australia, buy online from Woolworths, or pick one up at your local department store such as Priceline, Kmart or BigW.

Cover Girl – LashBlast Volume Blasting Mascara

I decided to review this mascara after hearing lots of people rave about it on YouTube. Made by Cover Girl it performs brilliantly. The spindles on the brush are set very close together making this mascara a little fiddly to apply, but at the same time the closeness of the brush spindles allows for greater separation of the lashes. This leaves you with loads and loads of lashes.

To apply this mascara carefully wiggle the wand through your lashes from root to tip. The brush is quite fat so be careful not to get the product on to your eyelids. Work quickly to apply the product to every lash before it dries.

For greater curling, gently press the eyelashes upwards with your finger while the mascara is still wet. Hold for a second and release! Be sure to clean any mascara off your finger before you wipe it on your clothes.

You will need to remove this mascara with a makeup remover, although most of it will be taken off with a foaming face cleanser or make up remover wipe. Many of my fellow YouTube gurus recommend this product in the waterproof variety too, and I might try that one next time to compare.

Product size: 7.2 ml
AUD Price: $17.50 ($2.43 per ml) but I bought mine on special for $13.50!
Find it: In Australia, buy online from Woolworths, or pick one up at your local department store such as Priceline, Kmart or BigW.

Mirenesse – Secret Weapon 24 hour Mascara

If you are someone who sleeps in their makeup on a fairly regular basis, or has super sensitive eyes, I highly recommend this mascara. The original formulation is AUD $35.00, but there are new variations with the same formulation but different brushes. Look out for the new SEXY Secret Weapon with the plastic fantastic brush – tried it – love it too although it is a little more expensive at $39.95.

This product has won many awards. Even better, Mirenesse is an Australian company and operates mostly as an internet business. You may find the odd chemist stocking a few products here and there, but check out the Mirenesse website for where to buy. This mascara is free from paraben, fragrance, mineral oil, petrolatum, alcohol and SLS (soap) and will suit even the most sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

This mascara will not dry your lashes, and the product wraps itself around each lash creating a little tube of color. There is no fall out, no smudging and no panda eyes even after sleeping in it. Jump in the shower and let some water fall on your face. With your eyes closed, hold your lashes to you cheek and slowly open your eyes. The little tubes will remain under your finger. You can take the same approach to removal by using a wet cotton pad, and wiping downward gently. You will see the tubes left on the pad.

Product size: 10 grams
AUD Price: $35.00 ($3.50 per gram)
USD Price: $27.00 ($2.70 per gram)
Find it: Buy it online from Mirenesse at http://www.mirenesse.com/ and select your country for accurate pricing. You can also buy Mirenesse from TVSN, and may even pick up a great set that includes mascara.  Find TVSN at http://www.tvsn.com.au/

Review - Burt's Bees Essential Body Kit

Recently I had a voucher from adorebeauty to use and I elected to put it towards the Burt's Bees Essential Body Kit for AUD$24.95. This kit is a collection of Burt's most popular all-natural creams, lotions and salves and is a great gift, or an excellent way for you to try out the best-sellers from Burt's. The products are not tested on animals. I had never heard of the range before, so was keen to test out all the goodies.

The kit comes in a clear plastic zippered pouch and contains:

- Citrus & Ginger Root Body Wash (29.5ml)
- Peach & Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub (15g)
- Hand Salve (8.5g)
- Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme (8.5g)
- Radiance Day Creme (7g)
- Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion (29.5ml)
- Replenishing Pomegranate Lip Balm (4.25g)
- Peppermint Foot Lotion (14ml)

I must say when I first opened my parcel I was a little disappointed at the size of the kit. Although the sizes of all items were clearly stated, I was expecting a larger sample in my mind. Note to self – read the details more carefully before ordering! The second thing I noticed was the smell. While all the goodies are locked in their bag together, the mish mosh of smells is quite strange and overpowering. As soon as I took the contents out of the bag and separated them, their own natural fragrances smell so good you could eat them.

My personal favourite from the kit so would have to be the Peppermint Foot Lotion. I was recently spotted sitting at my desk with my shoes off rubbing my feet with this delicious lotion. The refreshing peppermint smell turned heads, and my dry cracked heels were instantly transformed. I would definitely buy this product in its full size, however I believe adorebeauty currently only stocks the Coconut Foot Crème in the full size which is 123g and retails for AUD$24.95. I am sure this would work as well – but with a coconut smell in place of peppermint.

The other outstanding product is the Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion. I suffer from terribly dry and angry red looking skin on my upper arms. After a few days of using this cream, the skin was notably less red and softer to touch. The lotion is paraben free and phthalate free and is unlikely to irritate sensitive skins. The full size product is 236ml and retails for AUD$24.95.

One item I found a little disappointing (from a packaging point of view) was the Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme. While the tin was adorable and its contents smelt so good I could have spread it on my morning toast, I found trying to get the product out of the tin and onto my nail bed frustrating. I resorted to scraping the top of the crème with the back of my fingernail to grab enough to cover my nail beds properly.  I am not a fan of sticking my fingers into things, so I would love to see this packaged in a tube as an alternative - but not sure how that would work with the product texture.  I applied this balm to my dry sandpaper like elbows and my cuticles and it softened them right away.

All in all this was a great exposure to the Burt’s Bees product line. There are also baby gift sets and travel sets available for purchase and this is a perfect way to try out lots of the products before committing to the larger size.

Quick & Easy everyday makeup

The make-up in my latest video is very simple to achieve and is a great everyday look for home or office. This look can be worn by anyone but the gold especially highlights green eyes.

Products Used:

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural – Light-Medium (MAC 182 kabuki style brush)
MAC Cream Colour Base – Hush
MAC Blush - Cubic lightly dusted on top of Hush (Sigma SS197 Angled Blush)
F Y Eye Primer
Pur Minerals eye shadow – Gold Marcasite on lid & Burgundy Malachite on outer corners to crease. You could use MAC Goldmine or Gorgeous Gold and Club for a similar look.
Be sure to use the “pat and press” application technique when applying these eye shadows to prevent fallout.
Blend the edges with Pur Minerals Vanilla Feldspar. You can use MAC Shroom as an alternative.
MAC Eyeliner – Bountiful Brown (Bronze) only applied lightly under the bottom lashes
Cover Girl Volume Exact Mascara – Very Black

Product Review – Mineral Foundations

A word of advice regarding pressed mineral powders... If you are going to use these products as a foundation product alone, you will have a much better result if you apply a primer first. A primer will help the product adhere to your skin, and will fill in any pores or lines before you approach with these multi-dimensional powders. I have chosen to look only at the pressed powder compacts in this review.

MAC - Mineralize Skinfinish Natural
The MAC website advises this product is a low coverage powder which can also be used to set and fix liquid foundation, or for touch ups throughout the day. Without doing my own research, I bought this product thinking it be a duplicate or perhaps an up-market version of the Pur Minerals range. The sales person at MAC sold it to me as a lighter coverage mineral foundation for days when I can’t be bothered to apply a full face. Follow the same rule of thumb as mentioned in the review below for brushes to use for the coverage you prefer.

In my opinion this product is a poor comparison to the Pur minerals pressed powder when used as a foundation alone. My complexion can be quite ruddy and this powder just won’t hide the redness or pigmentation no matter how much powder I apply. It is excellent when used for its intended purpose such as setting my Studio Tech or liquid foundation. No obvious shimmer in this product but the finish is not quite matte either. The powder is baked and I have barely made a dent in my product despite regularly attacking it vigorously with a MAC Kabuki brush.

Product size = 10 grams
AUD Price $46.00 ($4.60 per gram)
USD Price $25.00 ($2.50 per gram)

PUR Minerals – Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation with SPF15
Includes a sponge & mirror well hidden in the base however the sponge is not really intended for applying the product, just touching up if required. For a light coverage apply with a fluffy powder brush, for a medium coverage try a Kabuki style buffer brush like the MAC 182 or the Sigma SS182. For full coverage apply with a dense flat top chisel brush, like the Sigma SS197. Pur minerals sell their own chisel brush but I find this a little scratchy on my skin. To cover spots or under eye shadows you can apply a little extra powder with a small fluffy brush however I prefer to apply a separate concealer to my trouble areas before applying the powder.

I use this powder on days where I don’t need a full face on, however this product gives excellent coverage and does cover my very red cheeks quite well until about lunchtime, and then needs a touch up. Its intended use is as a foundation / concealer / powder all in one however you can use it over a liquid foundation to set it too. The finish is quite matte so be sure to add a touch of blush.

Product size = 8 grams
AUD Price $49.50 ($6.19 per gram)
USD Price $24.50 ($3.06 per gram)
Buy online from TVSN
http://www.tvsn.com.au/ in Australia or http://www.purminerals.com/ in the US.

BEFORE: Note the redness and freckles are very obvious

AFTER: Although the lighting is a little different you can see the redness and most freckles are well covered. I applied Pur Minerals in LIGHT using a flat top chisel brush - Sigma SS197. For this photo, I hadn’t even used primer, just threw it on my bare face at the end of a hot day!
